Abstract
Title: NEES E-Defense: Seismic Performance of Interlocking Spiral Columns and Rectangular Columns Based on Shake Table Tests (NEES-2006-0254)
Year Of Curation: 2012
Description: In Japan rectangular bridge columns with hoop reinforcement are more common while in California interlocking spiral reinforced bridge columns are more common. Thus to compare the performance of CalTrans Seismic Design Code to the Japanese Railway Association Seismic Design Code a total of four test specimens were designed for evaluation. Specimen 1 and 2 are polygonal in cross section and employ the use of interlocking spiral reinforcement. Specimen 3 and 4 are rectangular cross sections with typical hoop reinforcement. These specimens were subjected to the JR Takatori Station ground motion records observed during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake. The ground motion was scaled for an elastic level (8%), yield level (14%), design level (90%), and maximum level excitation (120%). The same scaling was employed for each of the four specimens. Once these four scalings of the ground motion were performed for each of the specimens, the design and maximum level excitations were then repeated. Finally, the specimens were then subjected to an even greater scaling of 140% and a maximum scaling of 160% thus leading to the maximum displacement capacity of the shake table. This 160% ground motion was then repeated until failure of the specimens was rendered.
