Experiments and Analyses to Study the Seismic Response of Reinforced Concrete Frame-Wall Structures with Yielding Columns

Abstract

Experiments and analyses were performed to study the effect on lateral displacement response of two factors. These were the effects on drift response of (1) using slender walls in frames with yielding columns and (2) placing a structural hinge at the base of slender walls to reduce strength and stiffness requirements for the foundation. To provide experimental benchmarks against which to calibrate numerical models, two nine-story reinforced concrete frames were subjected to earthquake simulations. These small-scale structures (total height of 7 ft) included three columns and slender wall. To make recommendations about the proportioning of slender walls, maximum drifts calculated by nonlinear response-history analysis were compared with maximum drifts calculated by linear response-spectrum analysis. To make recommendations about the design of walls to resist shear, several pragmatic procedures for estimating maximum base-shear response of frame-wall structures were evaluated by comparing estimates with the observed response of test structures. The recommendations were combined with elements of current practice to form an alternative design procedure for structures located in regions of high seismicity.
