Abstract

Title: Damage Detection of Reinforced Concrete Columns Subjected to Combined Actions (NEES-2012-0882)

Description: The intent of this research project is to further explore the knowledge of smart aggregates developed at UH at the practical level so that they can be widely implemented in the industrial application.A smart aggregate consists of a water-proof coated piezoceramic patch encased in a small protective cube of concrete. The piezoceramic-based smart aggregates are multi-functional and they can be used to perform early-age concrete strength monitoring, impact detection and structural health monitoring. The effectiveness of the smart aggregate-based damage detection approach was verified by preliminary experiments performed at UH. However, these experiments were performed under static load conditions only. To further validate the effectiveness of smart aggregates for structural health monitoring, it is important to perform experiments under different load conditions, such as dynamic, pseudo-dynamic, and reversed-cyclic loadings. These tests were scheduled to be conducted at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla (MST).
