Abstract

Title: Field Measurement of the Linear and Nonlinear Constrained Moduli of Granular Soil (NEES-2013-1174)

Year Of Curation: 2013

Description: The purpose of this work is to measure the linear and nonlinear constrained moduli of a granular soil in the field.  To this end, two arrays of 3-D geophones will be constructed and embedded at two test sites located at Hornsby Bend.  Site 1 will be used for preliminary testing, and Site 2 (approximately 100 m from Site 1) will be used for a more comprehensive suite of tests.  The large Vibroseis truck ("T-Rex") will be used to load this site in stages to generate compression waves propagating downward through the geophone array.  The staged loading sequence will be used to load the soil over a wide range in strain.  In general, the sequence entails both limited static load tests and dynamic tests at multiple strain levels.  The compression wave velocities will be calculated from time delays in waveforms monitored by geophone pairs.  If the test regimen is successful in producing constrained compression waves and in measuring both the linear and nonlinear response of the soil, a field relationship between constrained modulus (M) and axial strain will be obtained similar to previous studies relating shear modulus (G) and shear strain.  As part of these tests, limited linear and nonlinear measurements of shear modulus will also be performed with T-Rex as the source.
