Abstract

Title: Hybrid Simulation Platform for Seismic Performance Evaluation of Structures Through Collapse (NEES-2010-0974)

Year Of Curation: 2014

Description: The research objective of this Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program project is to enhance the hybrid simulation methodology to evaluate the performance of large scale structures loaded up to collapse. Hybrid simulation, which combines numerical simulation with experimental simulation of structural elements, provides a more realistic, reliable, and economical approach to testing structural systems under earthquake loads. Fundamental contributions, addressing issues related to numerical, experimental and boundary condition errors and assumptions have been made in the development of algorithms used in testing and validation procedures. The computational platform provides capabilities for robust implicit integration algorithms enabling testing of complex structural. The hybrid simulation platform was used to evaluate the seismic performance of large-scale steel moment frame structures from the onset of damage through collapse in two series of tests. In the first series of tests, a half-scale 1A?-bay by 1A?-story physical substructure of a special steel moment-resisting frame is considered, while in the second series the physical substructure corresponds to the gravity framing system with a similar-sized specimen. The test method was found to be reliable and to provide significant insight into experimental behavior of structural subassemblies under realistic seismic loading.
