Abstract

Title: Testing of a New Line of Seismic Base Isolators called Earthquake protector (NEES-2006-0283)

Year Of Curation: 2011

Description: Status: Completed. The latest research activities at CSUN gave rise to the innovative passive control of building structures technology invented by Valentin Shustov and called Earthquake Protector (see http://www.structuralpedia.com/index.php?title=Earthquake_protector). The project is both analytical and experimental. Software for analytical research called Earthquake Performance Evaluation Tool (EPET) and developed by Sergey Shustov is now available at http://www.epet.space3d.biz. EPET enables virtual experiments with buildings on Earthquake Protectors. For comparison, those experiments may be accompanied with a virtual testing of identical but fixed-base buildings. On demand, all virtual experiments are animated. Twenty two shake table experiments on Earthquake Protectors have been performed at the UC San Diego Large High Performance Outdoor Shake Table with operational support from The George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation and from CSULB. Logistical support of the project was provided by Basseri Engineering, Santa Monica, CA. For the video clips related to Steps One and Three of the research project, click on http://www.ecs.csun.edu/~shustov/EP-2006.htm where you can see a comparative shake table testing of fixed building models (left) and a building models placed on seismic isolators called Earthquake Protectors (right). It is obvious that any sorts of precision equipment or museum artifacts, not just the building structures, may benefit from the Earthquake Protector application. Per the NEES Research Participation Agreement RPA-UCSD-2006-2, brief visual information about the research has been uploaded to the CSUN educational portal ShakeZone for Kids at http://www.ecs.csun.edu/~shustov/ShakeZone.htm and YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/vshustov. Full Report on the research is available at https://nees.org/data/get/NEES-2006-0283/Public/REPORT.pdf.
