Abstract

Title: Centrifuge Tests for Static and Seismic Soil-Culvert-Interaction (SCI) of Square Box Culvert Inside Dry Cohesionless Soil (NEES-2010-0969)

Year Of Curation: 2014

Description: The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of static loads due to soil and surficial foundation as well as seismic forces. The distribution of soil pressure around box culverts can lead to soil arching, which may result in an increase or decrease of the loading on the structure. The failure of box culverts during earthquakes can be due to different phenomena such as lateral spreading, surface faulting, or significant increase in the earth pressure on the roofs and sides of the box culverts. These earthquake-related hazards can result in catastrophic failure for important lifeline structures, thus subjecting communities to dangerous situations that should be avoided. Studies that investigate the effect of static and seismic loading on box culverts are still largely absent in the literature.
